Kambyo King Chris Tsuper: Love Radio and the Story of Tambalan
On 90.7 Love Radio Manila, Chris Tsuper helped turn everyday conversation into a reason to keep listening. As Nicole Hyala’s partner on Tambalan, the broadcaster known as the “Kambyo King” built a familiar presence through laughter, playful exchanges, and stories that brought listeners into the conversation.
Behind that radio name is Adrian Lagdameo Policena, a broadcaster whose public persona could be much louder than his private self. In a 2024 interview, he described himself away from the microphone as shy, observant, and introverted. The exuberance listeners knew was part of the performer he became on air.
His professional beginnings were in Quezon. A Far Eastern University Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication graduate, batch 2000, Policena started in radio after college at 100.7 Love Radio Lucena. An FEU alumni account credits Wilfredo Espinosa, Love Radio Manila’s program manager, with discovering him a year later and bringing him to Manila.
That route placed a provincial station at the beginning of a career that would reach a much wider audience. Before the familiar partnership and the appearances outside radio, there was the work of getting started behind a microphone in Lucena.
The partnership that defined his career grew from an unexpectedly simple beginning. A 2009 profile in The Philippine Star described Tambalan as developing from an unplanned traffic commentary into lively exchanges on a much wider range of subjects. What began as a moment on air became a format listeners returned to.
Known as Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura, the pairing made conversation itself an attraction. The same report described their expressions becoming part of everyday slang and their appeal extending to mall shows and television appearances. Their personalities could carry a show beyond the songs being played around them.
A central part of that connection was Kuwento ng Mahiwagang Burnay, where personal stories gave the hosts something to respond to together. Looking back in 2024, Chris singled out the segment’s colorful stories and the lessons they carried as things he would miss.
The show’s podcast material illustrates how that approach worked. A September 2024 Love Radio post presented a listener’s dilemma about whether to return an engagement ring after a breakup. The subject invited jokes, but it also gave listeners a recognizable question about relationships, expectations, and what people owe one another.
That mixture helps explain the appeal of the format: a personal concern supplied the story, while the hosts’ responses made room for both amusement and reflection. The listener’s experience remained the starting point.
Their radio success also led to recording work. Ivory Records signed the pair, and by February 2009 they were preparing their second album, Hey, Tambalan Na — The Mas Nakakalerkei Album. The recordings offered another way to hear the personalities audiences already knew from radio.
By 2013, the partnership had reached print through Tambalan Nicole Hyala at Chris Tsuper, published by Anvil. In an interview around the book’s release, Chris recalled worrying that barely a handful of people might attend its launch. The uncertainty was revealing: a following on radio did not automatically make them confident about being authors.
The response exceeded those expectations. The Philippine Star reported that the book had entered National Book Store’s bestseller list, while the pair already had three CD releases behind them. Chris compared their place in listeners’ routines to a favorite morning coffee—something familiar that people found difficult to give up.
His work also included television, with FEU’s alumni profile noting Music Uplate Live and appearances in Eat Bulaga! segments. Recognition continued alongside those opportunities. In 2019, the Guild of Educators, Mentors, and Students (GEMS) honored him as Best Male Radio DJ.
Inside the station, colleagues remembered a patient and encouraging senior. During his 2024 farewell, Mara Tonee spoke about his willingness to let her learn from mistakes. Angkol Dagol recalled admiring the tandem while working in Davao, while Conyo Bicolano described learning from Chris to respect radio and take its work seriously.
Those tributes showed another part of his contribution: younger broadcasters had listened to him before becoming his colleagues. For them, the familiar voice on the air had become someone who could offer practical encouragement at work.
The partnership marked its 20th anniversary in 2024. That September, Love Radio announced Hey! Kasalan Na!, a wedding celebration for 20 couples, as part of the anniversary activities. The project connected the show’s long-running interest in relationships with an event involving its audience.
Only weeks later, the celebration gave way to a farewell. On October 11, 2024, Chris made his final appearance as Nicole’s regular partner on the program. In a reversal of their usual roles, Mahiwagang Burnay featured Nicole’s own letter to him. The people who normally responded to someone else’s story had become the story themselves.
Nicole acknowledged how much the partnership had shaped her career: “Walang Nicole Hyala kung walang Chris Tsuper.” Chris, in turn, spoke about their different personalities and the understanding they found whenever the microphones were switched on. Their messages described a working relationship sustained by accepting those differences.
After leaving Love Radio Manila in October 2024, Chris turned his attention to a 2025 municipal council bid in Lucban, Quezon. He described the move as an opportunity to pursue public service and spend more time with his parents. His decision grew partly from outreach activities, including feeding stray dogs and cats.
His election bid was unsuccessful, as Love Radio reported in February 2026. That month, he reunited with Nicole Hyala for an interview on DZRH News Television’s Scenezone, where they recalled their two decades together and their emotional farewell. Their appearance brought the familiar tandem together again beyond the daily program that had defined much of his broadcasting career.
