Tina Ryan: A Pioneering Female Voice of Magic 89.9
Tina Ryan holds a place among Magic 89.9’s pioneering female voices. Her broadcasting career has taken her across several of Manila’s FM stations, including 99.5 RT and 103.5 Wow FM, while her work beyond radio has brought her to television, podcasting, and international events.
Her introduction to broadcasting came while she was still a high school student, a chapter recalled in a podcast interview released in November 2020. The episode looked back on her early entry into radio and the different stations and audiences she encountered along the way.
One of her distinctive assignments outside local radio was providing the voice of Lili, MTV Asia’s animated video jockey. The role placed a Filipino broadcaster’s voice within the regional music television scene. Her official PropertyGuru speaker biography also records appearances in films, television programmes, commercials, and print advertisements, as well as a viewer-voted Best Personality recognition for her participation in an MTV Asia reality show in 2000.
By 2009, Tina was broadcasting on 99.5 RT. A November report in The Philippine Star identified her as Tina Mendiola and described her morning programme, TNT. The article offered a glimpse of her interest in subjects beyond entertainment: after seeing a photograph connected to Illac Diaz’s environmental work, she invited him onto her show to discuss the project.
That encounter introduced her to Stand Up, an environmental song involving Filipino musicians. The report described her plans to approach other stations under The Radio Partners Inc. about launching the song together. It was an example of how a music radio programme could also become a place to introduce a cause and bring people into a wider conversation.
Another change came in 2010, when Tina joined the announced roster of 103.5 Wow FM. PEP.ph’s coverage ahead of the station’s August 23 launch listed her alongside Mr. Fu, Laila Chikadora, Tito Potato, and Justin Bibo. Wow FM was positioned as a station for a mass audience, giving her a different broadcasting setting from the stations with which she had previously been associated.
Her November 2020 interview also looked back on that experience of becoming a masa DJ. Taken alongside her work at Magic and RT, the Wow FM chapter illustrates the range of radio formats she has worked in, and the different ways a presenter can connect with listeners.
Recognition followed across different parts of her career. Her 2023 Asia Real Estate Summit biography credits her with receiving Gawad Tanglaw’s Best Radio DJ honour in 2013. The same biography highlights her singing and an open-mic engagement at Balcony Gastropub, adding another performance setting to her work as a broadcaster and host.
Her hosting career also developed internationally. PropertyGuru’s 2024 biography lists event engagements in the Philippines, the United States, Dubai, Thailand, and Australia. She served as the main presenter of its Asia Real Estate Summit in Bangkok in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024. These assignments brought her into conference settings, where the subjects and guests extended beyond the music and entertainment world.
Podcasting opened another space for conversation. Tina joined Sam Oh, Brother JPaul, and Instructor Harold on The Narrow Door, with episodes exploring questions about Christianity and faith. A June 2021 episode, for example, brought the group together to respond to listener questions. It added a different subject area to the range of discussions she had handled on air.
At Magic 89.9, her work continues to include programmes built around everyday interests. On Pets in the City, she joins Dog Coach Francis and Doc Apple for discussions about caring for animals. The station describes topics including veterinary care, grooming, diet, and dog training, giving pet owners a place to hear from people working directly with animals.
She also co-hosts Healthline with Doc Rylan Flores. According to Magic’s official programme description, the show brings in guests from health and wellness fields to discuss subjects such as nutrition, fitness, illness prevention, and lifestyle habits. Alongside her music presenting, these programmes keep her involved in conversations about the practical concerns of listeners’ lives.
Magic’s current DJ roster still includes Tina Ryan, connecting her early place in the station’s history with its present programming. From a high school student entering radio to a presenter working across music, interviews, and specialist discussions, her career continues to find new subjects for the microphone.
