Chinapaps: From China Heart to MOR and Beyond

· · 7

On MOR 101.9, Chinapaps was a familiar voice with an earlier name many listeners still remembered: China Heart. His career eventually expanded beyond presenting music into digital content and production, keeping him connected with the ABS-CBN radio community as its ways of reaching audiences changed.

Behind those names is Eric Francis Galang. In a 2016 interview, he traced his interest in broadcasting to DJ Triggerman of 97.1 WLS FM. He first sought a campus-jock opportunity at 16 but was considered too young. At 19, while studying Communication Arts at the University of Santo Tomas, he passed an audition and began training.

That opportunity did not last. His sister Dittie, who had worked at WRR 101.9, later brought him there to audition. Eight months afterward, the station called him for training. He eventually received an 8 p.m.–midnight slot and the name Chinaheart.

His first WRR stint ended with his resignation. He worked as a medical representative in Ilocos before former colleague Alvin Ancheta encouraged him to return. He went back despite there being no assured vacancy. Listeners who remembered him welcomed his return, helping him recognize how much radio mattered to him.

His work also grew to include telenovela dubbing and event hosting. The interest that began with listening to another DJ had developed into a profession built around using his own voice.

His association with Manila’s 101.9 FM stretched across changes in the station’s identity. Listeners knew the frequency as WRR 101.9 For Life!, later Tambayan 101.9, and then MOR 101.9 My Only Radio For Life!, which launched in Manila in July 2013. China Heart and Chinapaps belong to that longer history of the frequency.

At a February 2021 press conference, he said he had been with ABS-CBN for 24 years, placing the beginning of that relationship in the late 1990s. LionhearTV’s report identified him as the head of MOR’s digital team at that time.

He also explained why he remained with the network through its difficulties. His reasons centered on the support he had received and the lessons he had learned about how people were treated at work. He described staying as a way of giving back to an organization that had helped him through personal struggles.

The events of 2020 brought a major break in the station’s history. After MOR had gone off the air during the ABS-CBN shutdown, the network announced an online farewell special, Salamat, For Life!, for August 28, 2020. Chinapaps and Bob Zilla were named its hosts, joined by the station’s other personalities.

The announcement called them retired MOR DJs, reflecting their place as familiar senior voices returning for the occasion. The special gathered music, performers, and station memories around a goodbye to the operation listeners had known. For Chinapaps, however, it would be followed by another phase of work with the MOR community.

In February 2021, ABS-CBN announced MOR Entertainment, a digital offering beginning on February 14. Its launch roster included Chinaheart among the Manila personalities, alongside hosts from Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.

The new service combined live programs on Facebook and Kumu, podcasts on Spotify, and exclusive video content on YouTube. Its announced lineup included conversation, real-life stories, music, and familiar brands such as Dear MOR. The relationship with listeners could continue through a phone or computer even after the loss of the FM broadcast.

By then, presenting music was one part of a broader career that included responsibility for MOR’s online output.

A further chapter was documented in May 2023, when ABS-CBN announced weekend MOR Entertainment programs on its ALTO audio-streaming app. Chinapaps hosted the Sunday edition of MOR Rewind, a program built around hits and memories from earlier decades; DJ Popoy handled the Saturday edition.

That assignment brought his work back to a familiar radio skill: presenting music and giving listeners a reason to remember it. The delivery platform had changed, while the appeal of songs associated with particular moments in people’s lives remained central to the program.

Independently compiled DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 and DZMM TeleRadyo program guides published since 2025 list him as Paps Eric Galang, host of K-Paps Playlist. Those listings place his later presenting work in the DZMM/TeleRadyo lineup, extending his career beyond the MOR name.

Across those changes, Chinapaps kept finding new ways to do the work that first attracted him: sharing music with listeners.
