The Golden Voice of ABS-CBN: Peter Musñgi

· · 8

Peter Musñgi has spent decades giving ABS-CBN a voice audiences recognize. His rich, resonant delivery has introduced programs, promoted films, and brought energy to announcements across radio and television. For many listeners and viewers, that sound is familiar even before the name behind it is known.

Yet the broadcaster often called ABS-CBN’s “golden voice” has also worked as a disc jockey, program host, and radio executive. His career includes the daily work of running stations and developing services alongside the brief announcements that made his voice recognizable.

A native of Santiago, Isabela, Musñgi developed his interest in radio while still in school. The University of the East’s account of his career recalls that he spent high-school summer vacations playing records at a station managed by a relative. Broadcasting offered him an early opportunity to turn listening into practical experience.

He nevertheless pursued a business education, graduating from the University of the East in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Accounting. He passed the CPA board examination in 1973. The qualifications opened a professional path in accountancy, but radio remained his passion.

His preparation for voice work involved listening closely and practicing. In accounts of his early development, Musñgi described imitating announcers he heard on the radio, reading newspapers aloud, and eventually developing his own style. Actor and voice artist Joonee Gamboa was among his inspirations.

In 1972, he joined ABS-CBN’s FM operation at 101.9 MHz, then known as DZMM-FM. His work included playing approved selections, giving time checks, and voicing station identification. This early FM assignment belonged to a different period from the later AM news service known as DZMM Radyo Patrol.

That first ABS-CBN chapter was cut short when the network was shut down following the declaration of Martial Law in September 1972. Musñgi lost his job and continued working elsewhere in radio. His eventual long association with the company therefore included an interruption early in his career.

Along the way, he acquired a nickname with a lighter story behind it. While working in radio, he sang the nursery rhyme “Little Peter Rabbit” without realizing he was already on air. Helen Vela heard him, and the name “Peter Rabbit” stuck. It became another identity attached to a voice that would later sound imposing in movie trailers and network promotions.

Musñgi returned to ABS-CBN in 1987, following the network’s reopening the previous year. He became its principal announcing voice, beginning the long association through which audiences would hear him in television promotions, program introductions, and film trailers.

His responsibilities also grew within radio management. By 2012, his alma mater identified him as vice president for ABS-CBN’s Manila Radio Division and managing director of ABS-CBN Sports. His radio responsibilities covered the operations of both DZMM and DWRR.

The university also credited him with helping develop DZMM TeleRadyo, which brought radio broadcasts onto television. The format allowed audiences to see the presenters at work while following the news and conversations. Musñgi’s career thus included helping shape how radio could be experienced through another medium.

He also presented material intended to help audiences with practical concerns. His hosting work included the entrepreneurial programs Radyo Negosyo on DZMM and Kumikitang Kabuhayan on ABS-CBN television. These assignments added business and livelihood discussions to a career already spanning announcing and management.

His leadership received recognition at the 2011 CEO Excel Awards, presented by the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines. The citation highlighted his use of communication in directing DZMM projects, including its 2010 election coverage and public-service initiatives.

One of those initiatives was “Kapamilya, Shower Na,” a mobile shower project that assisted people in evacuation centers after Typhoon Ondoy. The service addressed a basic need during displacement: the ability to bathe. It also became the predecessor of DZMM TLC—Teaching, Learning, Caring, which combined mobile health and educational services.

The award announcement recorded a concise statement of his approach: “The leader’s role is crucial but it’s teamwork that really counts in the end.” He emphasized explaining a vision clearly and encouraging the people responsible for carrying it out. Those comments connect his skill in speaking with the less visible work of leading a team.

A colleague’s recollection shows how that encouragement could work on a personal level. In a 2020 Philippine Star column, Pat-P Daza recalled being paired with Musñgi for Teka Muna in 2013. She had no radio experience and was initially hesitant about the assignment.

Musñgi urged her to give it a few months. Daza remembered him explaining that, although radio paid less than television, the discipline and experience it offered were invaluable. The advice came from someone whose own working life had moved through announcing, production, programming, and management.

Their partnership later moved into a weekday program. In 2018, Musñgi and Daza became the anchors of Pasada 630. Her account preserves a view of him as a colleague helping another presenter become comfortable with the demands of live radio.

Another major disruption came in 2020, when DZMM’s AM broadcasts went off air. Musñgi remained part of the work continuing through TeleRadyo. During the station’s 35th-anniversary commemoration in 2021, he spoke about its history and expressed confidence that it would eventually be heard on radio again.

“Soon tayo ay magbabalik pa rin. Paniwalaan natin ’yan,” he said. His confidence in the station’s future was voiced while its people were continuing to reach audiences through cable television and online platforms.

His later presenting work included Balitapatan with Rica Lazo, listed in Radyo 630/Teleradyo Serbisyo’s programming in 2024. The assignment continued his involvement in news and public-affairs discussion, extending a career that audiences might otherwise associate chiefly with recorded announcements.

That work brought another distinction in 2026. At the 29th KBP Golden Dove Awards, held on September 30, Musñgi won Best Public Affairs Program Host for Balitapatan. ABS-CBN’s announcement identified him among the award-winning anchors of DZMM Radyo Patrol 630.

A recorded announcement captures only a few seconds of his work. Radio reveals the rest: preparing a program, sustaining a conversation, helping a colleague, and building the team that keeps a broadcast going.
