Samantha of 96.3 Easy Rock: From Mama Sugar to a Familiar Voice of Manila Mornings
The broadcaster’s journey connects a different on-air identity, a defining role in Easy Rock’s beginnings, and the daily work behind a reassuring radio presence.
Samantha is a radio host associated with the lighter side of the morning: familiar music, friendly conversation and an encouraging start to the day. Known on air as Samantha or Sam, she is one of the personalities of 96.3 Easy Rock Manila. The station presents her as a source of morning good vibes, reflected in her program, Good Vibes with Samantha.
Her broadcasting story, however, began before the Easy Rock name appeared on Manila’s FM dial. Her public professional profile dates her work with Manila Broadcasting Company to March 2001 and identifies experience in radio hosting and station supervision. That places her career within the company years before the launch of the station brand listeners associate with her today.
Before becoming Samantha of Easy Rock, she was known as Mama Sugar on 101.1 Yes FM. Easy Rock confirmed that earlier identity in its January 2024 retrospective about the station and its DJs. The move brought a substantial change in presentation: from the Filipino mass-market environment of Yes FM to an English-language station built around a relaxed musical atmosphere.
That transition coincided with a wider change at 96.3 FM. The station had previously operated under the WRocK brand. Following its acquisition by the Elizalde group through Cebu Broadcasting Company in October 2008, it became 96.3 Easy Rock on May 18, 2009. Its programming retained an emphasis on easy listening, soft rock and adult contemporary music, directed in part toward people listening at work or while driving.
Samantha became especially important to the new station’s sound. According to Easy Rock’s retrospective, she was its sole voice across ad-libs, time checks, commercials and other material during its early years. Her contribution therefore extended beyond introducing songs during an assigned program. Listeners could encounter the same voice throughout the station’s presentation, making her closely associated with its developing identity.
There was substantial work behind that familiar voice. A July 2015 interview-based feature by Claudine A. Datiles, published on the student journalism blog BD7AOnline, described Samantha combining morning hosting with station-supervisor responsibilities. At the time, the report placed her on air from 6 to 10 a.m., followed by duties involving the station’s staff and operations. It offers a contemporary glimpse of a working day that continued after her microphone shift ended.
The same feature described how she made time for her husband and children, and reported her determination to keep office work from following her home. Easy Rock’s own biography also identifies her as a mother. Together, those accounts add a personal dimension to her career: the morning host was balancing the demands of a broadcasting workplace with family life.
Her present station biography lists Good Vibes with Samantha and Wonderful Weekend with Samantha. It also identifies Hey Day as one of her segments, built around a broad range of everyday topics. These titles help explain her place in the station: a host whose conversation accompanies the music and invites listeners into an approachable, upbeat setting.
As Easy Rock’s roster expanded, Samantha became part of a wider team. Its current official lineup also includes Chloe, Shai, Andre Jordan and Jasmine. Those colleagues provide the context for her continuing role within a station that now presents several distinct hosting personalities across its programming.
Her work has also followed radio’s expansion into digital content. In May 2026, Yes FM’s account of an Expert’s Opinion episode featuring Samantha and DJ Rico Panyero discussed the range of tasks expected of a radio personality. These included writing, editing, preparing program material, creating social media content and taking part in promotions outside the studio. Their discussion offered a useful explanation of the labor behind a seemingly effortless broadcast.
A recent recognition adds another milestone. MBC Media Group announced that Samantha had been named Best Female FM Radio Personality at the ALTA Media Icon Awards 2026, thanking the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA–Las Piñas Campus for the award. The announcement places her among the broadcasters recognized by that year’s awards.
Samantha's career illustrates the adaptability involved in making a lasting place in radio: adjusting to a different format, helping establish a station’s sound, and taking on responsibilities beyond the microphone. For someone hearing her for the first time, the friendly morning introduction is only the beginning of that story.
