Nicole Hyala: The Life Behind Love Radio’s Unmistakable Laugh

· · 3

From an unexpected radio audition to Tambalan, station leadership, and a new broadcasting chapter.

For someone hearing Nicole Hyala for the first time, her laugh is an immediate introduction: big, unapologetic, and difficult to mistake for anyone else’s. Behind that familiar sound is Emmylou Gaite-Tiñana, a broadcaster whose work at 90.7 Love Radio Manila has included entertaining listeners and managing the station. Her career connects the intimacy of FM radio with the wider reach of podcasts and online conversation.

Raised in Manila, Nicole was the eldest of four children. Her mother taught science; her father worked at sea until a stroke left him partly paralyzed and unable to speak when she was eight. Helping care for her family gave her an early understanding of responsibility and financial uncertainty.

At Assumption College, she became a student council president and graduated cum laude in Business Management. Those credentials reveal a side that her boisterous radio character can obscure: an academically accomplished young woman with leadership experience before she ever became a familiar voice on the air.

Her route to broadcasting began after work on a political campaign and at a bank’s healthcare foundation. Heartbreak prompted a job change, and a Love Radio recruitment advertisement caught her attention. With no radio experience, she auditioned by discussing the economy and youth vigilance, unaware that the station wanted comedy. She thought she had failed. Instead, she was selected from more than 250 applicants.

An early account of Tambalan traces its beginnings to conversations between Chris Tsuper in the studio and Nicole reporting traffic from the field. Their exchanges became an attraction in their own right, eventually developing into a regular morning program. The appeal lay in the interaction: two people responding to one another with enough spontaneity to make listeners feel they were overhearing an entertaining conversation.

The partnership that began in 2004 became central to Nicole’s public identity. In their farewell broadcast two decades later, she described her radio persona as an exaggerated version of her real self. She and Chris acknowledged that they had different personalities away from the microphone, yet understood one another once they went on air. Their chemistry was a working relationship developed over years of listening, responding, and making room for each other.

Tambalan also gave listeners a place to bring difficult personal stories. Its Kwento ng Mahiwagang Burnay segment explored concerns that extended beyond romance. One 2023 installment, for example, followed a mother working in the United States who feared that her children in the Philippines loved their caregiver more than her. Such stories placed the emotional costs of earning a living alongside the show’s humor, giving its conversations a connection to everyday family life.

The audience came to be known as Tambalanistas, and their support followed the duo beyond broadcasting. By November 2013, Nicole and Chris had released three CDs and a Tambalan book. At the book’s launch, they worried that few people would appear; instead, they learned that the books allocated for the event had sold out before they arrived. The Philippine Star also reported the title’s rise on National Book Store’s bestseller list. Their success showed that listeners were willing to carry the companionship of the program into other parts of their lives.

Recognition followed that listener support. At the 2013 Yahoo! OMG Awards, Nicole won Female Radio DJ of the Year, while Tambalan was named Radio Show of the Year. Because the awards involved public voting, the wins also reflected an audience willing to actively support the personalities it heard on the radio.

In 2017, her retiring station manager asked her to take over. Initially unsure about the added responsibility, Nicole accepted encouragement from mentors and strengthened her management skills through Harvard Business School Online’s Management Essentials course. She took the course while balancing broadcasting, leadership, and a young family. It was professional training through HBS Online, rather than an MBA.

Her husband, Renly Tiñana, is another important presence in her public story. Family life has occasionally entered the radio booth itself: in March 2025, Love Radio documented a surprise serenade arranged for the couple’s 15th anniversary, with Diego Bandido, Robin Sienna, and station interns helping organize it. For listeners accustomed to Nicole supplying the laughter, the celebration offered a glimpse of her as the person receiving affection and becoming emotional on air.

Her family’s experiences have also given her online presence a more vulnerable dimension. In a 2021 YouTube video, Nicole and Renly spoke about their daughter Princess’s hospitalization with viral encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain. They described a frightening illness and a recovery they understood through their faith. Sharing the experience allowed audiences to see the worried parents behind the public personality. The laughter associated with Nicole existed alongside the same uncertainty and fear that other families face.

A further personal challenge became public on June 23, 2025, when Nicole told listeners that she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She spoke about the difficulty of announcing the news while retaining the humor familiar to her audience. Her openness changed the direction of the conversation: the broadcaster who regularly listened to other people’s struggles was now sharing one of her own.

She underwent thyroid surgery in July 2025 and later expressed gratitude that her voice had been preserved. Her account of returning to her hospital room included a characteristic first response: testing the microphone voice she depended on for work. By February 2026, ABS-CBN News reported that she was feeling like herself again after surgery. Her relief at retaining her voice underlined how closely her livelihood and public identity were tied to broadcasting.

Her professional life had already undergone a major adjustment. On October 11, 2024, Nicole and Chris aired their final show as the longtime Tambalan pairing, as Chris prepared to run for municipal councilor in Lucban, Quezon. Nicole’s emotional farewell made clear how much of her working life they had shared. The end of their daily partnership meant learning how to continue without the colleague whose responses had helped shape her own on-air rhythm.

That adjustment took time. In a February 2026 anniversary feature, Love Radio recalled Nicole admitting that moving on from the partnership had been difficult and that she had read books about letting go. The station’s account captured the lasting attachment surrounding the duo, both for Nicole and for listeners who still hoped to hear them together again.

A new chapter developed with Diego Bandido through Kumikinang na Tambalan. Its official podcast description presents the pair’s combination of humor, emotional conversation, and relatable personal stories, with support from The Pod Network and 90.7 Love Radio. The format carries the conversation beyond a scheduled broadcast, allowing people to listen when it suits them and giving Nicole’s work another route to audiences discovering her online.

The subjects remain grounded in ordinary pressures. A May 2026 episode featured a mother of three in Canada who was working two jobs while carrying much of the household workload. Nicole and Diego’s discussion placed exhaustion, marriage, and family responsibilities at the center of the program. It offers a useful introduction to her appeal: entertaining conversation that can also make space for problems listeners recognize in their own lives.

As of October 2026, Nicole remains associated with Love Radio as both a broadcaster and station manager. In August, she publicly reassured listeners as the station introduced changes to its programming. Her position now brings together the voice audiences recognize and the responsibility of helping the station maintain that relationship through change. The laugh may be the first thing a newcomer notices; the sustained work of keeping listeners company is what gives it meaning.
