Papa Dudut: The Storyteller Behind Barangay Love Stories
From student radio in Quezon to a familiar voice on Barangay LS, a successful podcast, and a television anthology.
A listener can come to Papa Dudut without knowing his face and still feel that he is speaking directly to them. On Barangay LS 97.1, GMA’s flagship FM station in Manila, he is best known as the host of Barangay Love Stories, a program built around listeners’ accounts of love, family, disappointment, and hope. His real name is Renzmark Jairuz Ricafrente, and his career has grown from provincial broadcasting into radio drama, publishing, digital storytelling, and television.
His own story began with loss and limited means. In a 2024 interview with Pia Arcangel, he recalled losing his father while very young and watching his mother, Elizabeth, raise her children through hardship. He wanted to repay her sacrifices, later naming a farm after her. As a child, he listened to radio and imitated its broadcasters.
That interest became practical experience while he was still studying. Southern Luzon State University identifies him as a 2007 BA Communication graduate whose radio career began at 17. Its alumni account records early work at MBC in Lucban and RGMA’s 91.1 Campus Radio. Before he became a voice associated with Metro Manila, he was already learning the work in Quezon province, fitting broadcasting around college life.
A 2011 profile places his move to Manila in 2008 and identifies Balita sa Barangay among his early assignments at Barangay LS. It also records a revealing encounter with a devoted young listener who was blind and became upset whenever she missed the show. The station invited her to celebrate her birthday with them. Even then, his work involved a relationship with people who found comfort in a familiar voice.
One important figure in his development was radio executive Glenn Allona. Papa Dudut has publicly credited Allona’s persistence and trust with opening opportunities he initially hesitated to accept. Looking back in 2026, he explained that he had once imagined himself better suited to lively music programming than emotionally demanding stories. Allona encouraged him to try. That willingness to place him in a different kind of program helped shape the career audiences now associate with his name.
He also worked alongside Ate Liza on Radyo Nobela, reading letters from listeners about their romantic experiences. A February 2013 station feature documented their partnership, placing it within Barangay LS’s combination of music, humor, and personal storytelling. Ate Liza belongs to an important chapter of his working life: the daily practice of responding to letters and finding a human connection in someone else’s account.
Barangay Love Stories became his defining program. In a 2015 interview, he dated the start of its drama production to September 2009. Its central material came from people sharing their experiences, with narration and dramatization turning those accounts into stories listeners could follow. The subjects carried a broad promise—love, life, and hope—allowing the program to address family struggles and personal setbacks alongside romance.
The emotional delivery associated with Papa Dudut was shaped partly by experiences of his own. In 2014, he admitted that reading painful stories could leave him emotionally drained. He also recalled a period after a breakup when his feelings entered his performance and listeners responded strongly. What audiences praised as convincing voice work sometimes came from a host who was hurting too. His account makes clear that the job required more than reading smoothly: he had to manage the feelings a story brought into the booth.
His approach to advice is similarly personal. Speaking in 2026, he said he offered options rather than presenting himself as an expert who could prescribe another person’s decisions. He also discussed protecting the identities of people involved in submitted stories, explaining that some accounts were set aside for that reason. These remarks describe a responsibility that sits behind the entertainment: people entrust a broadcaster with experiences that can affect lives beyond the program.
The audience expanded geographically as well. In October 2015, GMA began carrying key Barangay LS programs simultaneously through regional FM stations, bringing Barangay Love Stories to listeners across Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. A show associated with Manila could now reach people through the network’s provincial stations. For a broadcaster whose own training had taken place outside the capital, it was a significant widening of the conversation.
The stories also found a place in print. By 2015, his book Dear Papa Dudut brought together selected accounts previously featured on the program. The collection gave readers another way to revisit material they had first encountered through his voice. The move into books was an early example of how the relationship between storyteller and audience could continue beyond the original broadcast.
Television work followed well before he hosted a TV version of Barangay Love Stories. In 2016, GMA announced him as the voice-over for Juan Happy Love Story, the primetime series starring Dennis Trillo and Heart Evangelista. His recognizable delivery was being used in a different setting, connecting a radio personality with audiences watching a scripted television drama.
Awards helped mark the program’s development. At the 2022 Gandingan Awards, Papa Dudut won Best FM Radio Program Host, while Barangay Love Stories’ “Bagong Bayani” episode received the Most Development-Oriented Radio Drama award. That year, the program also won Best Entertainment Program at the 44th Catholic Mass Media Awards. He received the Gandingan award for Best FM Radio Program Host again in 2025, adding to recognition for both his performance and the work surrounding it.
Its digital growth brought another major milestone. In February 2025, Barangay Love Stories received a Spotify Creator Milestone Award after exceeding 50 million streams. By October, GMA reported that it had reached 100 million. At Spotify Wrapped 2025, it was recognized as Top Podcast in the Philippines and Top Podcast in the love and relationship category. These dated achievements show how a program rooted in FM broadcasting developed an audience that could choose when and where to listen.
Although his voice is its most familiar feature, Barangay Love Stories is a team production. The February 2025 milestone presentation included drama director Eduardo “Papa JT” Lubrin, radio executive Glenn Allona, and FM operations manager TJ Herrera alongside Papa Dudut. Remembering those collaborators gives a fuller picture of the work: the host supplies a recognizable connection, while dramatization and production help turn submitted accounts into an absorbing listening experience.
Alongside the station program, his digital work includes Papa Dudut Stories. Its official podcast listing describes a storytelling journey through radio, YouTube, and Spotify, with accounts centered on family, sacrifice, love, and hope. For someone discovering him online, this can be the first point of contact with a broadcaster whose reputation was established on FM. His audience no longer depends entirely on being within a station’s coverage area or listening at a particular hour.
Away from broadcasting, Jenymae “Jem” Angeles has been a central companion in his life. In his interview with Pia Arcangel, he described their long relationship and the businesses they built together, beginning with a salon and expanding into other ventures. His account placed her beside him through demanding work and the effort to establish a more secure future. Their partnership also became part of a deeply personal journey toward parenthood.
On April 2, 2024, the couple welcomed twins, Reign Jiana and Renz Jian. Papa Dudut has spoken publicly about conceiving through in vitro fertilization and the difficult period surrounding their premature birth. In GMA’s contemporaneous report, he thanked the doctors, nurses, relatives, and friends supporting them, as well as his Barangay LS colleagues for allowing a work-from-home arrangement while the babies received care. The man audiences called “Papa” had entered fatherhood himself.
Business became another substantial part of his working life. By 2022, GMA was reporting on his ventures in food, coffee and milk tea, alongside other businesses. Asked whether this meant retirement from radio, he said he remained happy at Barangay LS and appreciated the support of management. Entrepreneurship was developing alongside broadcasting, giving him responsibilities beyond the studio while he continued the work that made his name.
Fatherhood has also influenced his priorities. In September 2026, he explained that his children motivated him to improve his health so he could play with them, carry them, and remain present as they grew. The connection between his childhood loss and his determination to be there for his own family adds a personal dimension to the stories of responsibility and perseverance that audiences hear in his programs.
A major new chapter arrived on September 12, 2026, when Barangay Love Stories premiered as a television anthology on GMA. After 17 years of radio storytelling, its experiences could be presented through actors, visible settings, and performances. Papa Dudut remained the host linking the adaptation to its origins. At the launch, he spoke about the excitement of allowing audiences to see emotions and situations they had previously imagined through voices and sound effects.
As of October 2026, his work continues to connect radio, online listening, television, and direct encounters with audiences. On October 8, he joined Barangay LS colleagues at San Sebastian College-Recoletos Manila for a campus event and live broadcast. Addressing communication students, he encouraged openness to opportunities and adaptation to a changing media landscape. It was a fitting message from someone who had begun broadcasting as a student and kept finding new places for his voice.
His career offers a way to understand radio’s enduring appeal. A listener shares an experience, a production gives it form, and a familiar voice invites others to listen. Across changing platforms, Papa Dudut has built his work around that exchange—and around the possibility that someone else’s story can make a listener feel less alone.
